Create a USB Key Icon in Photoshop

In this Tutorial we’ll create a simple USB App Icon you can use in a dock, on a website project or any other projects, we’ll use some Layer Styles, Filters and simple techniques.

Step 1 – THE New Document

Open Photoshop and create a new document of 1250x1250px with a White background.

Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool (U), click on the canvas, this will open a option panel, I’ve created 1024x1024px with a 175px radius.

Select the Rectangular Marque Tool (M) and make a selection of the top part of the rounded square shape, create a Layer Mask with this selection, Layer – Layer Mask – Hide Selection.

Step 2 – Effects

Next let’s add some effects on this shape, go to Layer – Layer Style and enter those parameters:

Step 3 – Top Part 1

Now the body of the USB key is done, let’s create the top part of the key, make sure that you place all the layers we’re going to create under the first shape layer we created, select the Rectangle Tool, create a rectangle on the top of the body.

Add a Gradient Overlay layer style on this shape.

Create an other rectangle shape on top of the previous one, this time with less width. apply an other Gradient Overlay layer style on this new shape, change the fill of this rectangle layer to 0%.

Step 4 – Top Part 2

Create an other rectangle on top of the two we created in Step 3, the same size than the first rectangle we created in Step 3 and apply those layers styles to it:

Step 5 – Holes

Let’s now create the two holes on the top part of the USB Key, select the Rectangle Tool and create two similar rectangles.

Apply those layer styles on both rectangles

Now create a new layer, place it under the first layer we created, select the Brush Tool (B) with a big soft rounded brush and black for the colour, paint in the middle of the canvas. Next let’s hide some parts of this layer by creating a layer mask, make a selection of the Rounded corner square shape (Ctrl+Left click on the small thumbnail in the layer panel), make sure the black paint layer is selected and create a layer mask, Layer – Layer Mask – Reveal Selection.
